The identified data are automatically categorized and matched in the RunnerTag system. In addition, RunnerTag does not use the face recognition system, but instead analyzes the bib numbers and the sneaker brands and styles of the participants before categorizing the photos. Jamie recalled that when they first taught the AI to search for numbers in photos, it took hundreds of thousands of training attempts before it accurately identified numbers. He also mentioned that RunnerTag will continue to be trained to identify more features, but the training time will take longer. Jamie explained that through analyzing the bib numbers, shoes, and relevant data, the target photos can be accurately found. The reason why the company does not use face recognition technology is because it concerns private data, including the appearance of individuals. He added that RunnerTag only needs accurate data for analysis and does not want to collect private data of others.

Helping to Analyze the Market by Gathering Data on Running Shoes Brands

Besides identifying participants, RunnerTag can provide data on the different brands of running shoes used in marathons for market research purpose by collecting photos of participants’ shoes. This feature helps the industry to analyze customer preferences for brands and even styles through data analysis. Jamie mentioned that by collecting data from the marathons in Hong Kong, such as the “Sun Life Shine Resolution Run” in 2017, the company discovered that compared to other regions, Hong Kong people prefer to wear expensive sports shoes, indicating the relatively smaller market for cheap sports shoes in Hong Kong.
